Introduction to SB54
What is SB54?
SB54 is a state law that holds manufacturers and producers accountable for managing the lifecycle of their products, from design through to recycling and disposal. It’s part of California’s larger initiative to reduce waste, promote recycling, and create a circular economy where materials are reused rather than discarded. The law focuses particularly on plastics and packaging, two of the largest contributors to pollution, but its scope is expected to expand as new products and materials are included.
The law introduces a number of key provisions aimed at achieving its goals:
- Producer Responsibility: Under SB54, producers must fund and manage the collection, recycling, and safe disposal of their products, ensuring that post-consumer waste is properly handled.
- Sustainable Product Design: Producers are incentivized to create products using recyclable, reusable, or compostable materials, reducing the amount of waste that ends up in landfills or the ocean.
Expanded Recycling Systems: SB54 will work to improve the recycling infrastructure in California, ensuring that materials are effectively processed and reused.
