Who Is Blue Harmony?

Blue Harmony was founded by Hillard Witt, Pete Guinosso, and Tom Hansch, who all share a deep love for the ocean. Their passion for the sea has been a guiding force in their lives since they were young. Whether exploring the serene shores of coastal towns or diving into the depths of the open sea, they have always been connected to the ocean.

Driven to make a positive impact, the three formed Blue Harmony, 501(c)(3) non-profit organization dedicated to protecting and preserving our planet’s marine ecosystems. They set out to address some of the most pressing challenges facing our oceans, from plastic pollution and ocean climate change to overfishing and beyond.

Why Blue Harmony Was Started

Blue Harmony Foundation was born out of a deep passion for the ocean and a shared commitment to its health. Co-founded by Pete Guinosso, Hillard Witt and Tom Hansch, our organization was inspired by the cancellation of a cherished family tradition—abalone diving in California—due to the devastating impacts of ocean climate change. This pivotal moment highlighted the urgent need for action and advocacy to protect our marine ecosystems.

Recognizing the critical challenges facing our oceans, we set out on a mission to inspire individuals and communities to safeguard ocean health through education, collaborative initiatives, and sustainable practices. Our goal is to create a harmonious balance between humanity and the sea, ensuring a thriving marine environment for generations to come.

At Blue Harmony, we believe that collective action, awareness, and empowerment can drive meaningful change, fostering a world where vibrant oceans support diverse marine life and sustain the well-being of our planet.

Pete’s Journey Toward Ocean Conservation

Pete’s journey toward ocean conservation is a testament to the power of personal awakening and the call to action that arises when we truly see the world around us. It began with a gentle nudge, a stirring in his soul as he spent time diving into the crystal-clear waters with Hillard and his family. Each dive was not just an adventure but a deep communion with the ocean, revealing the intricate beauty and delicate balance of marine life. Yet, amidst this splendor, Pete couldn’t help but notice the unsettling signs of distress: bits of plastic waste showing up on the beach, abalone getting smaller, bull kelp disappearing, and a sense of urgency filling the salty air.

The quote, “If you see something that should be done and you think somebody should do something, just remember that you are a somebody,” resonated within him, igniting a flame of responsibility that he could no longer ignore.

With a heart full of passion and a mind awakened to the challenges facing our oceans, Pete embraced his role as a steward of the sea. He recognized that he could no longer stand by, waiting for someone else to take the reins of change. Instead, he dedicated himself to educating others, sharing the beauty and fragility of marine ecosystems, and inspiring a collective movement toward conservation. Through his work with Blue Harmony, Pete invites each of us to recognize our own power to effect change. His journey reminds us that we are all capable of being that “somebody” who steps forward to protect our oceans.

Together, we can cultivate a deep sense of connection and responsibility, transforming awareness into action and ensuring that the wonders of the sea endure for generations to come.

Abalone Diving

At Blue Harmony, we hold dear the rich tapestry of cultural heritage and the enduring traditions that shape our coastal communities. Co-founders Hillard Witt and Pete Guinosso have a long history of abalone diving that runs deep within their families, a cherished tradition that speaks to their hearts and souls.

Hillard’s journey began amidst the rhythmic ebb and flow of the Pacific Ocean, where his father and grandfather would often take him on cherished excursions to harvest red abalone—an exquisite delicacy celebrated for its tender texture and remarkable flavor. For Hillard, each dive was not merely an adventure; it was a sacred connection to his ancestors and a way to honor the traditions that have been lovingly passed down through generations. With every plunge into the crystal waters, he felt a profound bond with the ocean and a deep reverence for the abundant gifts it generously provides.

In 2007, Pete had the privilege of joining Hillard and his family on one of these unforgettable diving excursions. As he explored the stunning coastal waters of Northern California, Pete’s respect for nature blossomed, further solidifying his lifelong commitment to ocean conservation. Together, these experiences have woven a rich narrative of connection, stewardship, and love for the ocean—a narrative that fuels our mission at Blue Harmony.

From Family Tradition to Ocean Conservation

From the stark realities of climate change and the insidious spread of plastic pollution to the troubling consequences of overfishing, the stakes are higher than ever. We believe that conservation is not just a responsibility; it is a sacred duty. Our singular goal is to safeguard the beauty and biodiversity of our oceans, ensuring that future generations can marvel at their wonders. Through our initiatives, partnerships, and advocacy efforts, we strive to cultivate a sustainable future for our oceans and the communities that depend on them.
